Taking a cue from earlier tours, Lollapalooza’s organizers on Friday announced a diverse lineup for this summer’s reworked festival.
Performers July 23 and 24 in Chicago’s Grant Park will include the Pixies, Widespread Panic, the Killers, the Bravery, Kaiser Chiefs, Liz Phair), Weezer, Dashboard Confessional, Dinosaur Jr., Billy Idol), Cake, Arcade Fire, Ambulance LTD, Kasabian, Los Amigos Invisibles, Sound Tribe Sector 9, Z-Trip, M83 and more. A complete lineup can be found at www.lollapalooza.com.
Except for one-hit wonder Digable Planets, the lineup is surprisingly free of hip-hop. In the past, Lollapalooza helped bring artists like Ice Cube to white audiences.
In true underground fashion, festival organizers signed on a few local Chicago bands, including the Redwalls, a blues rock outfit that will soon release its debut on Capitol Records, and The Changes, possibly the only unsigned group on the festival bill.
Festival producers promise 60-plus bands on five stages over the two days. Besides music, organizers will launch Kidsapalooza, a children’s area with performances, art and food.
Festival founder Perry Farrell, who announced the lineup, hinted that he may provide a surprise performance.
“I want to perform, but I don’t want to let people know where I’ll perform,” said the Jane’s Addiction founder. “I’m not even sure I’m going to do it. I think it’s better to get out of the way and let the new art thrive.”
