Bolstered by a surge of radio support, Kanye West’s “Gold Digger” featuring Jamie Foxx vaulted into the top slot on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart Thursday, ending the summer-long run of Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together.”
“Gold Digger” jumped 18 places, leapfrogging past numerous contenders for the summit, including Carey’s own “Shake It Off,” which remained No. 2 for a second week. (The Hot 100 is determined by both radio airplay and retail sales.)
“We Belong Together,” which fell to No. 4 in its 23rd week on the Hot 100, can certainly claim the title as the song of summer 2005. The title held the chart’s No. 1 slot for 14 of the last 15 weeks, unseated for just one week by “American Idol” winner Carrie Underwood’s “Inside Your Heaven.”
Missy Elliott’s “Lose Control” featuring Ciara and Fat Man Scoop climbed one place to No. 3, while the Pussycat Dolls’ “Don’t Cha” slipped two to No. 5.
Bow Wow’s “Like You” featuring Ciara” rose one to No. 6, trading places with Rihanna’s “Pon de Replay.” Fall Out Boy’s “Sugar, We’re Going Down” jumped four places to No. 8, followed by Bow Wow’s “Let Me Hold You” (down four at No. 9) and Lifehouse’s “You and Me” (down two to No. 10)
Notable advances come from Green Day’s “Wake Me When September Ends” (yp four to No. 11), Black Eyed Peas’ “My Humps” (up nine to No. 16) and Shakira’s “La Tortura” featuring Alejandro Sanz (up 10 to No. 24), which the pair performed during the recent MTV Video Music Awards telecast. On the Hot Latin Songs chart, “La Tortura” was No. 1 for a third consecutive week and 12th overall.
The top debut was Sean Paul’s “We Be Burnin”‘ at No. 88. Also bowing on the chart were 50 Cent’s “Outta Control” (No. 92), Frankie J’s “More Than Words” (No. 94) and Audioslave’s “Doesn’t Remind Me” (No. 95), while P$C’s “I’m a King” featuring T.I. and Lil Scrappy re-entered the list at No. 96.
Rob Thomas’ “Lonely No More” was No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary airplay chart for a fifth week, while Gorillaz’ “Feel Good Inc.” was on top of the Modern Rock for a fourth. On the Mainstream Rock chart, Seether’s “Remedy” fell to No. 2 after seven non-consecutive weeks on top, toppled by Staind’s “Right Here.”
On the Hot Country Singles chart, Brooks & Dunn’s “Play Something Country” advanced one to No. 1 in its 16th week on the chart, ending the two-week reign of Faith Hill’s “Mississippi Girl.”
