Courtney Love was arrested this morning in New York and charged with reckless endangerment and third degree assault after allegedly throwing a microphone stand that struck a man in the head.

Love, in town to promote her solo debut America’s Sweetheart, was at the East Village club Plaid for a surprise gig early this morning when the incident occurred. The twenty-four-year-old victim was taken to a local hospital where he was listed in stable condition.

The incident at Plaid followed a bizarre appearance on The Late Show With David Letterman Wednesday afternoon. Love stood on Letterman’s desk, sang a few lines from “Danny Boy” and bared her breasts, the first of several times she lifted her shirt during the show.

Love’s New York City appearance came just a day after she was in a Los Angeles courtroom, where she faces felony drug possession counts from an arrest last October. Love’s behavior at Wednesday’s hearing was described as erratic, drawing the ire of Superior Court Judge Elden Fox, who warned her during one of several outbursts, “Ms. Love, you’re not doing yourself any service.” Love’s next court appearance on those charges has been set for April 15th.

Love, 39, has been bent on proving that there is such a thing as bad publicity. Sweetheart was released a month ago to a modest Number Fifty-three debut on the charts. Since its release, the album quickly exited the Top 200 and has yet to register six-figure sales.

She’s scheduled to perform at New York’s Bowery Ballroom tonight. Calls to Love’s label were unanswered.
