Britney Spears’ latest video showing the star killing herself in the bath has been condemned amid fears it’ll spark copycat suicides.
In the storyline for Everytime, which is due to be shot this weekend, Spears will be seen dead with an open bottle of pills at her side.
But a mental health charity and a children’s group have condemned the video which is to be directed by David LaChapelle, who made Christina Aguilera’s raunchy Dirrty promo.
The Sun says the script sees Spears and her boyfriend battling their way to a hotel room through crowds of paparazzi. The couple then fight and he smashes a wine bottle at her feet.
The next scene is in the bathroom and shows a hand putting down a glass of wine, water trickling around the cracks of the tile and the bath overflowing.
On the ledge stands a bottle of pills with the cap removed. When her boyfriend realises what is happening he rushes to help her but is too late to save her.
Michelle Elliot, director of parents’ group Kidscape, said: “This is absolutely outrageous, totally irresponsible, completely stupid.”
Marjorie Wallace, of mental health charity SANE, added: “It’s profoundly irresponsible to show anything that hints that you can take your own life. I know how influential pop videos can be.”
There has been no comment from the Spears camp about the video.
