Teen pop star Avril Lavigne hopes her new album, “Under My Skin,” will show people how much she’s matured in the three years since co-writing her debut album.

“I just felt I was a little better expressing myself, and that’s why the lyrics are deeper and more emotional,” the 19-year-old Canadian singer told The Associated Press recently.

She said she hopes her fans, especially her teenage ones, understand what she’s getting at with her songs.

“I write from personal experiences, so I hope they can relate,” she said. “That’s important to me … writing about things I’m going through at the age I’m at. My fans are pretty much like my age.”

Lavigne, who was nominated for five Grammy awards, has sold 4 million copies of her debut album, “Let Go.”

She was recently named to Teen People’s list of “Hottest Stars Under 25.” How does she feel about that?

“It means that there are at least a few people out there that like me,” she said with a laugh. “It’s great to be part of that list, I guess. And it’s great to be under 25.”
