For the rapper Nas, VIP might stand for Very Infuriated Performer.
Nas was charged yesterday with smashing a bottle against the head of a clubgoer who had the nerve to infiltrate the VIP area at the trendy Meatpacking District nightspot Cielo, cops said.

The multiplatinum rapper, also known by his birth name Nasir Jones, surrendered to detectives at the 6th Precinct stationhouse in the West Village yesterday shortly after noon. He was arraigned last night and his bail was set at $7,500, according to his attorney. He was ordered back in court on Jan. 20.

Nas, 30, was accompanied by his lawyer and charged with assault in the Dec. 10 incident, police said.

There was no argument leading up to the 2:45 a.m. assault, according to police who said Nas attacked without warning.

“One guy enters the VIP area, and the guy clocks him in the head with a bottle,” a police source said. The unidentified victim suffered minor injuries, cops said.

Nas, who grew up in the Queensbridge Houses in Long Island City, burst onto the music charts in the early 1990s with the album “Illmatic,” winning acclaim for the strong narratives in his songs.

He also has gained fame for his long-running feud with rival rapper Jay-Z.

Despite his success, Nas has not been able to avoid legal trouble. In 1995, he was arrested on gun charges in Queens after cops found a .357 magnum pistol in his car.

His spokesman declined to comment on yesterday’s assault charges.

Officials at Cielo, a small venue on Little W. 12th St. known for its intimidating bouncers and gorgeous clientele, did not return calls.
