Organisers of the MTV Europe Awards 2003 today recruited 500 “screamers” to attend the event next week.
The group of loud-mouthed music lovers were selected at an audition held in Edinburgh’s Princes Street Gardens.

Organisers want the enthusiastic fans to vocalise their appreciation of the acts at the celebrity-packed ceremony, which is being held in the Scottish capital on Thursday.

The lucky winners will join the likes of Beyonce, Kylie Minogue and The White Stripes at the event at the Ocean Terminal complex in Leith.

About 1,500 pop-mad teenagers and adults screamed themselves hoarse and danced themselves crazy in a bid to get their hands on a coveted ticket to the exclusive event.

The talented final 500 were selected by a Pop Idol-style panel of judges.

On the night, they will be filmed as they watch the live action from their positions close to the stage.

Spokesman for the organisers, Simon Crellin said: “We got 500 screamers, but we could have had a lot more.

“We selected people with a lot of attitude and who are really into their music.

“Some of the real characters include a fantastic couple in their 40s, an obligatory guy in a kilt, three break dancers from Edinburgh University and someone in a shiny silver suit and cowboy hat.”

Among the famous names set to appear at the awards ceremony are Pink, Sean Paul, The Darkness and Travis.
